Growing up, I have fond memories of time spent with my grandpa. I remember how he would always tease me and my cousins by removing his teeth, and we would be amazed at how he did that and try it ourselves.
As an adult and a mother, now I understand better about taking care of our teeth and mouth, in general, so that we don’t lose our pearly whites.
One thing I didn’t get until I became a Health Coach was, how our oral health was connected to the rest of our body. Everything in our body is connected so when you neglect one area others may suffer.
Your mouth is full of different bacteria which our daily brushing and flossing can generally keep under control. However, if you don’t take proper care of your mouth, it can lead to oral infections, tooth decay and gum disease. Certain medications or illnesses can lower your body’s resistance to infection making oral health problems even worse.
Top Essential Oils You Can Choose
In addition to proper brushing and flossing, adding essential oils can give you an extra layer of protection. Many are antibacterial and antifungal making them an effective way of supporting oral health.
1. Clove Oil
Clove protects nerves, soothes pain and helps prevent tooth decay. You can also use clove to relieve tooth pain, dry socket and other dental disorders. Clove essential oil slows tooth decalcification and helps remineralize teeth.
2. Peppermint Oil
Peppermint helps freshen breath, reduce swelling, inflammation and tenderness. Peppermint essential oil has also been shown to inhibit the formation of biofilm formations linked to dental cavities.
3. Myrrh Oil
Myrrh helps fight gum disease, infections and sores. It also helps soothe gums. Try it to relieve toothaches and gingivitis. Use to make your own mouthwash or add to toothpaste.
4. Cinnamon Oil
Cinnamon is another essential oil that helps freshen breath and cleanse the mouth. Honestly, it’s one of my favorites for promoting oral health because of the taste. I love cinnamon! You can also use it for gargling to help combat oral infections.
Different Ways To Use These Essential Oils
My favorite ways to use these essential oils are to add directly to toothpaste or combine with baking soda and use when brushing your teeth. You can make your own mouthwash or add the essential oils to coconut oil for oil pulling as well.
As you’re working to improve your health, don’t forget to include your oral health. With daily brushing, flossing and using essential oils, you’re well on your way to having fresh breath and feeling better.
